Hello everyone. We come to Monday once again, and that means we can talk some Star Wars. I’d like to continue my list of favorite characters, and today I present my case for Princess Leia.

When we first see her, she becomes the one that sets the story in motion. Giving the precious plans to R2D2 and setting him on his mission to find Obi Wan, Leia then attempts to fend off the Empire’s attackers all by herself. She gets captured but shows firm resolve, not breaking her silence despite numerous threats and tactics from Vader and Tarkin. After being rescued, we see what an integral part of the Alliance she is. She goes on various dangerous missions for them, not to mention what she does for her friends. She saves Luke after his duel with Vader, frees Han from carbonate, and then kills Jabba the Hutt. She also helps lead the charge to take down the shield generator on Endor, helping the Rebels destroy the Second Death Star.

Whenever people talk about female heroes in movies, Leia is I think about. I cannot think of a single character in the saga as devoted to their cause as she is. Despite the tremendous losses she suffers, she never wavers in her commitment to the Alliance and what it represents for the galaxy. She faces Vader himself and resists his powerful mind probing. Even after watching her home planet get destroyed, she continues to fight. Not to mention, her relationship with both Han and Luke is such an integral part of what makes the original trilogy magic. Their bond is often imitated, but never duplicated. And she’s a total badass!! She starts the saga off trying to kill as many stormtroopers as she can. So yeah, Leia was a genuine female hero long before it became mainstream, able to stand alongside her male counterparts as an equal.

Well those are my thoughts for this week. As always, feel free to comment and let me know what you think. I’ll talk to you all again next week.
